Cast members preview Karen Zacharías’ play about neighborly disputes

Marlee Andrews and Deborah Marlowe, both of whom are performing in a new production of Native Gardens at the Spokane Civic Theatre, joined E.J. Iannelli in the KPBX studio to talk about Karen Zacharías’ play.

The play hinges on a clash between neighbors when the young professional couple Pablo and Tania del Valle move into a house next door to the older, retired couple Ginny and Frank Butley. An impending barbecue for Pablo’s work colleagues sets off a dispute over borders and landscaping choices.

Andrews is playing Tania, and Marlowe is playing Ginny. They’re appearing opposite Emilio Maldonado (Pablo) and Thor Edgell (Frank). Dawn Taylor Reinhardt is directing this production.

Native Gardens opens tonight (Dec. 2) in the Civic’s Firth J. Chew studio space and runs until Sunday, December 18, 2022.
