The director and cast members of a Bard showcase talk about its ASL component
Kearney Jordan, director of the Spokane Civic Theatre Academy, came into the KPBX studio along with Audrey, Connie and Sadie Overstreet to talk with E.J. Iannelli about the academy’s production of Shakespeare Beyond Words.
More than a ‘best of’ showcase of the Swan of Avon’s famous scenes, Shakespeare Beyond Words is a new partnership with the American Sign Language (ASL) certification program at Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC). SFCC students will be interpreting the Elizabethan dialogue in ASL in real time.
Jordan is directing this production, and the Overstreets are performing as members of the cast. As part of the interview, they took the time to perform three brief scenes from the production. In addition to the academy’s youth actors, veteran Civic actors like Jameson Elton (Wizard of Oz) and William Marlowe (A Christmas Carol) will be lending their talent to the show.
Shakespeare Beyond Words opens on Friday, February 10 and runs until February 12 in the Firth J. Chew studio at the Spokane Civic Theatre. Tickets and more information are available at the Civic’s website.
