This summer, wonder is waiting around every corner.

At the heart of our Summer of Wonder are two magical productions. Our teen and young adult company takes on Shakespeare’s enchanted forest in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and our youth performers tumble down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland Jr. Auditions for both productions will be held in late May — and we can’t wait to see who steps into the magic.

Characters

The Athenian Court:

  • Theseus – The Duke of Athens, powerful, noble and a bit straitlaced – tends to govern by the book.
  • Hippolyta – Queen of the Amazons, his fiancé. She may have been conquered in battle, but she is strong and independent – knows her own mind.
  • Philostrate – Major Domo of the Court. Devoted to his boss – a “yes” man.
  • Egeus – A nobleman of Athens, father of Hermia. Head of his family and expects to be obeyed. Somewhat hotheaded.
  • Courtiers – may double as Fairies

The Four Lovers: lots of slapsticky physical combat, a bit of hugging and hand-holding

  • Hermia – Egeus’ lovely daughter, in love with Lysander. Wants her own way in the face of her overbearing father and makes a daring decision.
  • Lysander – A young nobleman, in love with Hermia. A well born young man, virtually indistinguishable from…
  • Demetrius – A young nobleman, wants to marry Hermia, but formerly in love with Helena. He has treated Helena callously and we are not sure quite why.
  • Helena – A young Athenian woman, Hermia’s best friend, in love with Demetrius. She is currently in the throes of self-pity at being thrown over and is not handling it well.

The Mechanicals: Workmen of Athens and the actors in Pyramus and Thisbe

  • Peter Quince – a carpenter, Director and Prologue. Very organized and very proud of his adaptation of Pyramus and Thisbe. Determined to direct a masterpiece.
  • Nick Bottom – the weaver/Pyramus. Supremely confident in his local status as the best actor ever. Spoiler – he isn’t, but he doesn’t let that stop him from writing the book on overacting. Role involves some embracing and hugging with Titania.
  • Francis Flute – the bellows mender. Plays the role of Thisbe. Since he is the youngest of the workmen, he gets cast as the lady love of Pyramus. Not happy about it, but ultimately takes on the role with a vengeance.
  • Tom Snout – the tinker. Plays the role of The Wall. Not a great talent, but plays his part as written which is the best that can be said.
  • Robin Starveling – the tailor. Plays the role of Moonshine. He knows that his role is underwritten and pretty much meaningless, but is determined to say it all despite heckling from the crowd.
  • Snug – the joiner. Plays the role of The Lion. He is slow of study, and he knows it. The fact that he memorizes an entire paragraph is a marvel.

The Fairies:

  • Oberon – King of the Fairies. Powerful and charismatic, also devious and a bit ruthless. Loves Titania, but tends to be a bit of a player.
  • Puck (Robin Goodfellow) – Oberon’s mischievous assistant. A powerful spirit, he is devoted to his boss, but has been known to go a bit rogue. Loves to play tricks on foolish mortals.
  • Titania – Queen of the Fairies. She is a powerful spirit in her own right, but also a bit of a flirt. She loves Oberon, but also likes to get her own way in love and war. Role involves some hugging and embracing with Nick Bottom.
  • Her Court: Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed. Spirits of nature, devoted to their Queen, even if they don’t always understand her actions. May double as Courtiers.
